The Error Of Ecumenism
|Written by Admin|
The aim of this article is very simple - to point out the error of ecumenism. It is given out of a desire to highlight some truths of the Word of God. There will be those, I am sure, who will accuse us of of hatred or spite. We are used to this accusation. But you can be assured, it is out of love for the souls of men and women, that this article was compiled. We do not hate individual people, but we are certainly against any system or group that would lead their people astray from the plain teaching of the Word of God.
The "Unitatis Redintegratio" - (DECREE ON ECUMENISM) given by the Roman Catholic Church in Rome, on 21st November, 1964, gives us an idea what Ecumenism is.
It says, "Everywhere large numbers have felt the impulse of this grace, and among our separated brethren (ie Protestants) also there increases from day to day the movement, fostered by the grace of the Holy Spirit, for the restoration of unity among all Christians. This movement toward unity is called 'ecumenical.' ”
The Roman Catholic Church believes that Protestants are the ones who have "gone away" from the true Church, and that we need to be brought back !
"....in subsequent centuries much more serious dissensions made their appearance and quite large communities came to be separated from full communion with the Catholic Church”......."the children who are born into these Communities and who grow up believing in Christ cannot be accused of the sin involved in the separation.”
So, according to the Decree, the Reformation was a sin ! We would call it the Grace and Deliverance of Almighty God, and thank Him for His Mercy to us, in giving us such a deliverance from error !
The Decree implies that Protestants are an inferior type of Christian in contrast to those of the Roman Catholic faith.
"Nevertheless, our separated brethren, whether considered as individuals or as Communities and Churches, are not blessed with that unity which Jesus Christ wished to bestow on all those who through Him were born again into one body, and with Him quickened to newness of life-that unity which the Holy Scriptures and the ancient Tradition of the Church proclaim. For it is only through Christ's Catholic Church, which is 'the all-embracing means of salvation,' that they can benefit fully from the means of salvation.”
It is very clear that such a unity, will still have the pope as the head of that Church - of that we have no doubt. Read what they say next:
"We believe that Our Lord entrusted all the blessings of the New Covenant to the apostolic college alone, of which Peter is the head, in order to establish the one Body of Christ on earth to which all should be fully incorporated who belong in any way to the people of God.”
It goes on to briefly talk about the differences between the two sides, for example in relation to "the work of redemption, and consequently, concerning the mystery and ministry of the Church, and the role of Mary in the plan of salvation.”
What role of Mary in the plan of salvation ?? This is blasphemous ! Mary had no role whatever in salvation! Much better if they talked about the role of the Lord Jesus in the salvation of Mary ! For she too needed a Saviour !
Luke 1:47, Mary said, " And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.”
You see, that statement has hit the "nail on the head" - it is vital that we grasp the way of salvation. What your Church teaches as the way of salvation is so very important. There are souls in the balance here. A Church is meant to give spiritual direction, and if you direct your congregation in the wrong way - well, that is a very serious thing indeed.
That very statement alone about salvation, is enough to exclude fellowship with the Church of Rome. There is no other way of salvation, except through repentance and faith in the Finished Work of the Lord Jesus Christ.
"Jesus Paid it all, ALL TO HIM I OWE !
We didn't get saved through Jesus Christ PLUS anything (or anyone) else. It's ALL to Him we owe ! We owe NOTHING to Mary for salvation! Mary was the earthly mother of the Lord Jesus Christ. God was Gracious to choose her, as the vessel for which the Virgin Birth would come about, but that's it ! Nowhere in the Bible do we read of her having any role whatsoever in salvation.
I don't have time in this article to examine things like penance, praying to saints or to Mary, the mass, purgatory, confession of sins to a priest, but all these things are nowhere to be found in the Word of God.
Amos 3 verse 3 says, "Can two walk together, except they be agreed?”
Either what the Church of Rome teaches is right or what the Word of God teaches is right. They cannot both be right !
But, there are two sides to the coin! Many "Protestant" pulpits do not teach or preach repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as the only way to Heaven ! Many teach salvation through good works, Church attendance, communion, baptism, and various other ways. Dear friend, if your minister does not lift up the Lord Jesus Christ, week by week, as the only Saviour, if he does not preach repentance and faith in the Finished Work of the Lord Jesus Christ, if he does not tell you of a Heaven to gain and a hell to shun, then, quite frankly, he is not being faithful to your soul, for this is the plain teaching of the Bible.
"The way to Heaven is straight and plain, will you go ?
There is a whole mix up today about unity. A lot of people teach that there must be unity at any cost, that if you don't agree with the ecumenical unity, then you are a stirrer, and you are filled with hatred, instead of love. But you cannot have unity at the expense of the truth ! That is a sham unity !
Proverbs 23:23, "Buy the truth, and sell it not....”
Romans 16: 17,18, " Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
Test the Scripture. Line up what these people teach against the Word of God ! If they say there is any way to Heaven other than repentance and faith in the Finished Work of the Lord Jesus Christ, then this is a false doctrine, and they should be avoided.
I finish, by making an appeal which was also made in the FAQ section, on the same subject.
To any Christian who would find themselves in an ecumenical Church, we would ask you to examine for yourself, and see if what we are saying is true.
We are not seeking to win you over to the Free Presbyterian Church (while of course we would love to have you with us ! ) All we seek is, (if your Church is in the ecumenical movement), for you to come out from the system of ecumenism and apostasy (for they go hand in hand), and take your stand for the Lord Jesus Christ and His Word.
Can you remain within a system which is so contrary to the Word of God and seeks to water down the Truth of the Gospel ?
To the voice that would urge you to stay in and "work from within the system," do you not hear the echo of the Word of God , "Come out from among them, and be ye separate" (2nd Corinthians 6:17).
One day, you will meet the Master, Face to Face. Will it not be good to say, "Lord, while I may not have been much, yet by Thy Grace, I took a stand for Thee, and for Thy Truth, and refused to be unequally yoked in a system which is contrary to Thy Word."
"Stay in......" .... "Come Out"....Which will it be ?
".. always abounding in the work of the Lord..." 1Cor15:58
