What Is Repentance ?

repentanceRepentance is godly sorrow for sin - but it's even more than that - it means a complete turning round of direction, and thinking.

A true picture of repentance is found in Luke 18 verse 13:

" And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto Heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

Another picture is found in that of Zacchaeus.

"And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. (Luke 19:8)

Not only had Zacchaeus repented, but he had totally changed direction. He was following through with his repentance - he was a changed man !

True repentance results in a true change of character.

" Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (2nd Corinthians 5:17)

You see that ? Old things are passed away - there has been a change in direction - a change of thinking.

Repentance is a word that a lot of Churches do not like to use nowadays. But if you are going to be changed,  then you will have a genuine sorrow for your sin, and that will result in a desire to turn around and change direction, away from the life you once lived.

This change can only come about through a spiritual rebirth - through salvation - by faith in the finished Word of the Lord Jesus Christ.
You cannot bring about this change by yourself !

"Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.... (Acts 3:19)
